Postponing Spine Surgery Can Be a Bad Idea

With the low success rate of traditional open spine surgery, its invasive nature, and the high failure rate following the surgery, it was not surprising for people in need of spine surgery to wait or even avoid getting surgical treatment in the past. In addition, the high cost of these procedures and the long recovery time made many people to continue suffering in pain instead of having surgery. However, the emergence of minimally invasive spine surgery eliminated the need to postpone having surgery. Nowadays, there is no need to suffer when there are highly successful solutions to your back pain. In fact, many times waiting can be harmful and prolongs the treatment plan and the recovery time.

For instance, waiting to get treatment for a herniated lumbar disc can lower the patient’s potential for full recovery after treatment is received. In this condition all or part of the jelly-‐like material in the center of a disc between two vertebrae in the lower back is forced through the weakened outer wall of the disc. When the disc herniates, it invariably puts pressure on a nerve root causing numbness, tingling, burning and/or weakness in one or both legs.

A study conducted on 1,192 patients in 11 states and published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery found that patients with herniated lumbar disc symptoms were significantly worse off if the patients had symptoms for more than six months prior to treatment, compared to those who had symptoms for six months or less. The study authors also found that surgical treatment was significantly more effective than non-‐operative treatment. At all follow-‐up intervals patients who sought surgical treatment within six months of the onset of symptoms reported better outcomes than those who waited more than six months. These findings fly in the face of the traditional beliefs, which had been that one should abide with herniated disc symptoms for a long time before seeking a surgical solution.

A pioneer of the most advanced techniques in spine surgery, the Bonati Spine Institute has developed highly successful minimally invasive spine surgeries to treat most spinal disorders, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, pinched nerves and more. With a 98.75% patient satisfaction rate , the patented Bonati Spine Procedures have made lengthy, painful, partial recovery after spine surgery a thing of the past. Postponing spine surgery is no longer the best choice, in fact the sooner the damage is stopped, the faster the recovery will be. These procedures are performed as outpatient surgeries, so there is no need for costly overnight hospitalization and the recovery time is only a few days, letting patients get back to their active life shortly after the surgery.
