Christal Nash had been an athlete, working out 3 hours a day and running half marathons. Yet spinal stenosis in her cervical spine was causing tremors, spasms, headaches, light headedness and debilitating back and shoulder pain. Christal, who lives in Homestead, Florida, contacted the University of Miami Hospital. Surgeons there recommended a fusion of 5 of the 7 levels of Christal’s cervical spine with the insertion of 10 screws. They also advised her that it would be at least 4 months before she could know what range of motion she could expect.

Clayton Greenleaf of Collegedale, Tennessee’s passion is restoring old cars. In his early 20’s he injured his back lifting cord wood. At that time he was working in an auto body shop where he would constantly need to twist transporting heavy objects and would occasionally fall off of the framing machine. The result was over 30 years of lumbar spine pain with degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis at the L4/L5 level and bone spurs and impinging scar tissue from a previous failed spine surgery.

Don Deville of Ville Platte, Louisiana, suffered with severe degenerative disc disease at the L3/4 and L4/L5 levels of his lumbar spine. The pain from the compressed sciatic nerve radiated down his right leg, causing numbness from the thigh to the calf. Don’s right leg was growing increasingly weaker. Eventually, as Don states, ”Sitting became my exercise of choice. I spent a lot of time by myself and didn’t go out much because I couldn’t”. Even if Don did venture out there was always the chance that his weakened right leg would collapse when he tried to extend it.

Gary Littrel was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroics during the Vietnam War. It was in that war that Gary first injured his back. Although the pain eventually subsided it reappeared while Gary was training in Panama. His pain placed him in traction for two weeks. Over the next 17 years the pain in Gary’s hip grew progressively worse and over the last two years forced him to become housebound. On a bad day Gary would spend all of his time confined to a reclining chair. Gary felt guilty and ashamed that he could not help his wife do the chores that he did previously.

John Hunter, 53, of Houston, Texas, has played baseball since he was a young man. He suffered a car accident which fractured vertebrae in his lower back and ruptured the intervertebral discs. John stated “… I thought my life was over the pain was so bad. I couldn’t walk, couldn’t stand”. He had a highly invasive “open” spine surgery at a different facility through an incision so large that it took 27 staples to close it. Seven days after the procedure his pain returned, this time worse than before.

Margaret DeSelle of Deville, Louisiana, was referred to The Bonati Spine Institute by a former patient who had had a successful surgery. She was experiencing pain from her hip down to her ankle. She attributed it to “… lifting all those years and everyday life.” She suffered a long time with chiropractic manipulation and physical therapy not providing any relief. She would take a pain pill before starting work and a pain pill after work. Margaret, however, knew that painkillers were not a lasting solution to her pain. She could not enjoy family life, especially running and shopping with her daughter Ashley

Missy Radfar is a 57-year-old mother of two who resides in Lutz, Florida. She underwent surgery for a lumbar spine problem at another facility and that alleviated about 80% of her pain. However, shortly after she began experiencing headaches caused by a condition in her cervical spine. She was told by numerous doctors that there was nothing that they could do for her. She tried pain management, including 10 corticosteroid injections, but they failed to provide relief. Dr. Hirschauer, the head of pain management at The Bonati Spine Institute remarked that “… since I deal in pain management I see patients who have been on pain pumps and heavy duty drugs. Yet when they leave here they have a personality change.”

Monica Lemoine’s pain began with a car accident that she experienced at the age of 20. The accident caused Monica to go through the windshield of the car fracturing a cervical vertebra. This resulted in spinal cord compression in the cervical area causing neck, shoulder and arm pain. Monica is a registered nurse practicing in a hospice facility in Alexandria, Louisiana. Because her condition caused the thumb, index finger and middle finger on her right hand to go numb she was unable to administer IV’s or to push syringes. Her son Chase remembers her at this time as “… always in pain, always laying down.” Dr. Hirschauer, the head of pain management at The Bonati Spine Institute remarked that “… since I deal in pain management I see patients who have been on pain pumps and heavy duty drugs. Yet when they leave here they have a personality change.”

Robin Shaw is from Elkins, West Virginia, an area that has produced numerous patients seeking relief at The Bonati Spine Institute. This influx of patients was started by Mike Ross, a former West Virginia state senator, Bonati Spine Institute patient, and advocate for The Bonati Spine Procedures. Robin had been in constant pain for more than 20 years. She had spine surgery while in the military at another facility, but it was unsuccessful. Robin subsequently had a hard time standing up straight and when she tried it produced severe sciatic pain. An avid bowler, Robin found that she could only bowl one game because after that she would have trouble bending over to retrieve the ball. Her morphine pump and two kinds of painkillers were not working. Neither were the epidural steroid injections she underwent every four months. Her husband Matt remarked that “… watching her have pain in the hospital was difficult.”

Walter Crooks, 45, of Alexandria, Louisiana works in air conditioning / refrigeration and enjoys off shore fishing and hunting. He was in an auto accident 20 years ago which left him with compressed nerves in his neck, causing numbness in his right thumb and first finger. The bulging discs were located at the C4/C5 and C6/C7 levels of his cervical spine. He lived with that pain for another 15 years. His local doctors recommended fusion surgery involving rods and screws, but Walter balked at that, knowing that fusion surgeries were largely unsuccessful and could cause additional problems. He underwent chiropractic manipulation, steroid injections and physical therapy but none provided relief from the dull aching numbness he was feeling.
