The Bonati Spine Institute Offers Hope to Sufferers of
Severe Whiplash Injuries

Hudson, FL – April 8, 2010 - The Bonati Spine Institute, the leading center for the patented Bonati Spine Procedures for minimally invasive laser spine surgery, has extensive experience in helping individuals suffering from severe whiplash injuries lead pain-free lives.

“Our innovative range of advanced spine procedures has helped countless sufferers of chronic, painful whiplash injuries resulting from severe trauma,” commented Alfred O. Bonati, M.D., creator of The Bonati Spine Procedures and Chief Surgeon at The Bonati Spine Institute. “When conservative measures fail to provide relief, individuals do not have to suffer needlessly.”

Whiplash is an injury to the neck (the cervical vertebrae) resulting from rapid acceleration or deceleration, or “whipping,” as in an automobile accident. This type of motion strains the muscles and ligaments of the neck beyond their normal range of motion.

The neck is most vulnerable to injury in this type of accident, but injuries may include damage to the cervical discs, the cervical vertebrae, the spinal cord and nerve roots, and the muscles and ligaments in the neck and back.

In a recent study, about 18% of patients suffering from whiplash continued to have significant pain two years after the accident. Patients who did not get well tended to be older, had pain which began sooner after the accident, and/or had their head rotated to either side at the time of impact. They also found that patients who, before the accident, had a history of neck pain, arthritis of the neck, or headaches did not do as well.

Whiplash rarely requires surgery, but is appropriate in severe cases. If pain has not improved after extensive non-surgical treatment, an operation may be the best option. The type of surgery depends on what part of the cervical spine has been injured. In a research study by Drs. Gogduk and Aprill, leading whiplash researchers, in 23% of patients, facet joints alone were the cause of pain, in 20% of patients the discs alone were the cause of pain, and in 41% of patients both the facet joints and discs were contributing. They were not able to identify the source of the pain in only 17% of their patients.

The Bonati Spine Procedures, developed by Dr. Bonati, have a success rate of over 90%. Patients suffering from pain associated with whiplash, now have renewed hope with The Bonati Spine Procedures.

Developed and perfected by Dr. Alfred O. Bonati, The Bonati Spine Procedures are advanced spine surgeries employing a small incision to correct problems of the lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine with patented instrumentation and methods. The patient, under local anesthesia, is alert and able to communicate with the surgeon throughout the procedure. The result of this approach is far less trauma to the muscles and tissues, minimal blood loss and faster recovery.

For over 28 years, The Bonati Spine Institute has been the leader in least invasive outpatient spine surgery. Alfred O. Bonati, M.D. was the first to develop and patent methods and instruments for laser spine surgery to correct problems of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine known as The Bonati Spine Procedures. Available only at The Bonati Spine Institute, these gentle procedures have been performed successfully more than 35,000 times to treat conditions that include spinal stenosis, arthritis of the spine, herniated discs, bulging discs, whiplash, failed back surgery syndrome, and degenerative disc disease. For more information, visit www.bonati.com.
