The Bonati Institute® Celebrates Healthy Aging® Month

Healthy lifestyle choices reduce risk of chronic back pain

Hudson, FL – September 2, 2009 – The Bonati Institute, the leader for advanced arthroscopic spine surgery, has joined the nationwide public information campaign in recognition of Healthy Aging Month. Healthy Aging Month was designed to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older as the older population grows rapidly, especially with the aging of the "baby boomers," those born between 1946 and 1964 and those who will begin turning age 65 in 2011.
Americans know what they need to do to increase their chances of living longer and healthier, but despite health recommendations , most still aren’t making smart lifestyle choices, new research indicates.

Back pain is the most common complaint brought to doctors in the United States. Back pain is something almost all of us will experience at some point in our lives.Worldwide, more than 25 million people suffer from back pain, according to the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons. Working towards a healthy lifestyle – including good food, low stress, balanced exercise plans, and adequate restful sleep – all helps contribute towards a healthy spine.
Even though the back supports the majority of a person’s body weight, only a small proportion of adults are engaging in regular exercise or working hard to maintain a healthy weight, according to a researchers’ report in the June 2009 issue of The American Journal of Medicine.
Something as simple as 30 minutes of exercise every day makes a significant impact in a person’s overall well being. Regular exercise is even more important for seniors than other age groups. The risk of disease and lost mobility is greater and the positive effects of sustained exercise can be realized more quickly.

Back pain is a symptom that can result from many different causes. Strained muscles and ligaments account for the majority of lower back problems. Structural problems such as damage to the disks, arthritis, osteoporosis, and curvature of the spine also cause back pain. There are also numerous risk factors that can increase a person’s odds of developing back pain, including obesity, smoking, having a sedentary job, doing physically strenuous work and anxiety or depression. Aging also increases the chance of having back pain related to degenerative disease.

There are a wide variety of treatments for back pain, but prevention is the best course to follow. There are many things you can do to prevent yourself from joining the ranks of those who suffer from it. By staying in good shape with regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, your back will thank you by being able to better withstand the knocks and jolts of daily life, according to the Mayo Clinic. Standing, sitting and lifting in a spine-friendly manner will also help you avoid lower back pain.

About 5 percent of patients suffering from back pain experience chronic pain lasting longer than three months, according to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. When conservative measures fail to provide relief, it may be time to see an orthopaedic surgeon to have the pain evaluated. In relatively few cases, surgery is recommended.

Advances in medical technology enable surgeons to repair spinal conditions while minimizing the disturbance to surrounding healthy tissue. The Bonati Proceduressm are an innovative range of advanced spine surgeries developed and perfected by The Bonati Institute. Through an incision no larger than ½”, The Bonati Procedures introduce a series of arthroscopic dilating tubes to access the targeted area. A laser and other specially designed instruments are then inserted through the dilating tube to correct problems of the lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine, including spinal stenosis, spondylosis, degenerative disc disease, and herniated discs.

These outpatient procedures utilize local anesthesia, leaving the patient alert and able to communicate with the surgeon throughout the procedure. Over 35,000 of these procedures have been successfully performed at The Bonati Institute.
