Spinal Stenosis Surgery and Treatments

In many cases, non-surgical treatments do not treat the conditions that cause spinal stenosis, although they may temporarily relieve pain.

Severe cases of stenosis often require surgery. The goal of the surgery is to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerve by widening the spinal canal or the foraminal canal. This is done by removing, trimming, or realigning the abnormal anatomy that is causing the compression of the nerves.

Decompressive Laminectomy

This is a common surgery to treat stenosis in the lumbar spine.

In this procedure, the lamina (roof) of the vertebrae is widened to create more space for the nerves.

By employing The Bonati Procedures, a surgeon may perform a laminectomy without fusing vertebrae and avoiding the insertion of hardware, such as pedicle screws.

Other Treatments for Spinal Stenosis

  • Foraminotomy: The foramen (the area where the nerve roots exit the spinal canal) is widened by removing abnormal anatomy such as bone spurs or scar tissue.

  • Laminotomy: A small portion of the lamina, or the “roof” on the vertebra is removed to relieve pressure on the nerve roots passing between the vertebrae.
